This Is the Best Generator I’ve Ever Owned and It’s Almost 40% Off on Prime Day

Prime Day 2025 runs from Tuesday, July 8 through Friday, July 11, and Lifehacker is sharing the best sales based on product reviews, comparisons, and price tracking tools.

Power outages and blackouts are an inevitable part of modern life. Sure, you can get by without candles and patience, but long outages lasting hours or even days are a real problem, especially in warm weather. Sitting in the dark and sweating while all the expensive food in the fridge goes bad is not the most pleasant experience.

I solved this problem by buying a DuroMax generator – it’s currently on sale for almost 40%. It’s not the first generator I’ve ever owned, but it’s by far the best for three main reasons:

  • Power: With a working power of 10,500 watts, which can be increased to 13,000 watts, this generator easily supplies electricity to everything you need in your home, including appliances and air conditioning. It also features an automatic switchover, allowing you to supply power to your entire home without interruption.

  • Electric Starter: If you’re like me, pulling the cord of a traditional recoil starter, especially when you’re in a hurry after the headlights just went out, is always a bummer. But the XP13000EH features a push-button electric starter, making starting the engine a breeze (don’t worry, there’s a recoil starter backup, too).

  • Dual-fuel. The first time you forget to fill up your gas tank before a severe storm may be the last time you forget—or not. The dual-fuel feature allows you to have a 20-pound (or larger) propane tank on hand to run your generator when you’re out of gas, and switch between the two as needed. Plus, propane means I don’t have to worry about emptying my gas tank or disposing of leftover gas.

It’s not the easiest generator to transport — the tires aren’t flat and it rolls fairly easily, but it’s not easy to load into a truck or car. In other words, it’s portable, not ideal for portability. But as a whole-home backup generator, it combines power with ease of use.
