The world of mechanical keyboards is a beautiful, but also confusing, place. Clicky mechanical keyboards not only make a satisfying clicking sound when you type, but they are also incredibly tactile. The keys themselves are durable, and typing on a mechanical keyboard reduces fatigue and provides a much faster response than a regular laptop keyboard.
But getting started with mechanical keyboards can seem like a daunting task. What keyboard base should you use? What are the best keys? If you just want to try a mechanical keyboard without worrying about all that, get the Keychron K2. I’ve been using the Keychron K6 for years, and if I had the chance to go back, I’d buy the K2. Plus, Amazon’s Prime Day sale has it marked down to $55.99 (was $79.99). Considering customizable mechanical keyboards cost over $100 to get started, that’s a bargain.
Why I Recommend the Keychron K2 Keyboard
Keychron is a respected brand known for its outstanding mechanical keyboards. They work great with both Mac and Windows via Bluetooth, or you can connect them to your computer via USB-C. Keychron also offers keys for macOS and Windows that can be easily swapped (e.g. Command for Mac, Control for Windows). You can connect up to three devices and switch between them using keyboard shortcuts. (I use this shortcut all the time when switching between Mac and PC.)
The keyboard can last up to 72 hours on battery power, which is about seven days of full use. Mac users will be happy to know that it supports Mac function keys. Plus, the keyboard features white LED backlighting (like Mac keyboards).
The K2 is 75% the size of a full keyboard, meaning it has the same layout as a laptop, but isn’t squished. All the keys are full-sized and spaced comfortably apart. There are also extra buttons on the side for the Page Up, Page Down, Home, and End keys. And, best of all, it has full-sized arrow keys, the only thing missing from my K6 keyboard, where they were uncomfortably squished under the Enter key.
This version of the K2 keyboard features Gateron G Pro Brown switches, which are a cross between the two. The red switches are smooth and clicky, while the blue switches have the clicky feel you’d expect from a mechanical keyboard. The brown switches provide a light, tactile response, which I think is ideal. (If you don’t like the brown switches, a silent model with red switches is also available for the same price.)
