New to Prime Day? We’ve got the lowdown on everything you need to know . Sales are accurate at the time of publication, but prices and inventory are always subject to change.
While the benefits of gardening are numerous, and few things on earth are as satisfying as pulling up a ripe tomato or a gorgeous rose you grew, much of the time spent in your garden is care and maintenance, and the amount of pruning you’ll do in your lifetime is, well, a lot. Pruning is a critical task, especially in the spring and fall. But no matter how sharp your tools are, the repetitive motions are hard on your hands. Every gardener has hand cramps that get worse with age. It’s no surprise that electric pruners have become very popular in the last few years: I bought — and highly recommend — these Worx electric pruners , which are on sale for $89 (regular price $130) on Prime Day.
The concept of electric pruning shears is simple: you simply hold the blades up to the cutting area and press a button. The blades close, and you don’t have to exert any force. This model has a particularly ergonomic design, so it’s comfortable to hold. Worx calls it a pruner/lopper, which is what attracted me to it (pruners are usually longer and designed for larger branches than pruning shears). This model handles larger branches with ease. As long as the branch fits within the blades (up to 2.5 cm), the Worx pruner will handle it – I’ve cut both hardwood and softwood.
I was worried that the electric pruner would slow me down, but it turns out that it’s just as fast and effective as the manual ones. It takes a minute to get used to using the machine, but the relief you feel in your hands is worth it. I can even switch hands and use the pruner without using my dominant one, just by pressing a button.
The Worx weighs about two pounds, which is heavier than a hand pruner, but it doesn’t feel heavier. The counterweight is well designed, so the pruner is lightweight and easy to maneuver.
It still needs to be disinfected between plantings, just like hand pruners, but I always keep a spray bottle of vinegar on hand just for that. At the end of the day, I take the battery out and put it on the charger (the Worx comes with both batteries, or you can buy extra). For less than $100, I’ve gone from dreading pruning to enjoying it.
