This is a love letter to my favorite heart rate monitor, the Coospo H6 chest strap , which, by the way, is also on sale today. I trust this chest strap so much that I use it to check the accuracy of other devices. And a chest strap doesn’t have to be expensive to work well — this one is just $23.99 during the Prime Day sale.
Why This Is My Favorite Heart Rate Monitor
This is an electrical sensor, not an optical one. Regular smartwatches use green light reflecting off blood vessels. This is a “good enough” way to measure heart rate, but it’s prone to error in many situations. Wrist-based heart rate monitors work on the same principle, and there are a few chest straps with an optical sensor. (I wouldn’t recommend using them. If you’re going to wear a chest strap, go for the more accurate electrical one.)
On the other hand, an electrical chest strap heart rate monitor, like the venerable Polar H10 (also on sale today, $76.19 down from $104.95) or my humble Coospo, measures your heart’s electrical signals and is much more accurate . For that reason alone, I recommend this type of monitor. You’ll get more reliable data.
It’s inexpensive . You don’t need any extra bells and whistles to simply measure your heart rate. High-end monitors like the Garmin HRM 600 have other features, like sensors to collect running dynamics data and storage to collect data when you’re away. But if you just want to measure your heart rate, it’s a simple task that even a budget gadget like the Coospo can handle.
The strap can be removed for washing . For some reason, not all heart rate monitors have this feature. Coospo is removable, I wash the strap in the shower after training, and everything is fine.
The battery lasts a long time . The Coospo runs on a 2032 coin cell battery. I find that I have to change it about once a year.
You don’t even need a smartwatch to use it . Thanks to Bluetooth, the band can be connected directly to your phone. (This is true for most modern heart rate monitors.) I use the free Polar Beat app when I want to go phone-less, but the Coospo also syncs successfully with every device I tried, and there were dozens of them: Garmin, Apple Watch, and even a Peloton Bike.
Since I bought this one, Coospo has released other chest straps. The H808S is essentially the same thing, but it has a little LED that lights up when it’s on, which is really handy. It’s $26.26 today, and I’d say the extra $3 is worth it, but either one is a good choice.
