The AirPods Pro are fantastic earbuds, but they’re not for everyone. Sure, they’re hard to beat if you’re locked into the Apple ecosystem, but they’re not as compelling for Android phone users, Windows PC users, or both. I know Sony doesn’t make its products easy to remember because of its terrible naming system. It’s hard to remember a product name that sounds like a strong alphanumeric password, especially when there are two completely different Sony products with very similar names. The Sony WH-1000XM5 are a pair of over-ear headphones I wrote about yesterday , and the ones I’m talking about today are called the WF-1000XM5, which are portable noise-cancelling headphones that could give Apple’s AirPods a run for their money. The two Sony earbuds share just one character in their names: H for the large ear cups, and F for the portable ones.

I assure you that once you try the Sony WF-1000XM5, you won’t be able to forget them that easily. These are some of the best-sounding earbuds out there, and they earned their spot on Lifehacker’s best wireless earbuds of 2025 list. PCMag’s review of these earbuds praised them for their sound quality, noise cancellation, microphone clarity, wireless charging case, and adjustable sound quality via an equalizer in the companion app. The review criticizes the app for being a bit bloated and cites its price as the only other major downside. There’s nothing you can do about the app, but the discounted price is definitely a lot better at $199 compared to the retail price of $299. The all-time low for the Sony WF-1000XM5 is $180, which means you’re still getting a good deal if you decide to buy these earbuds during Prime Day 2025.
