New to Prime Day? We’ve got a guide to everything you need to know .
The Legion Go S was yet another Windows-based gaming handheld when it launched earlier this year, trying to follow the success of the Steam Deck. It could have languished in obscurity, but now it’s one of the few non-Steam Decks you can install SteamOS on , and Valve has even partnered with Lenovo to sell new models of the device with the beloved operating system pre-installed. This Prime Day, it’s on sale for $590 (was $650), a great opportunity to get a Steam Deck upgrade .
This Legion Go S model features an AMD Ryzen Z2 Go processor, 16GB of memory, and 512GB of storage. The IPS display supports up to 120Hz for super-smooth gaming, outperforming even the 90Hz Steam Deck OLED panel.
On paper, even running Windows on this device is an upgrade over Steam Deck and improves game compatibility, but in practice, running Windows can be a huge drain on resources, which is typically a problem for gaming handhelds. That’s why it’s great that Valve has made SteamOS available for non-Steam Deck handhelds, and benchmarks are already showing that it’s a huge boon for otherwise identical hardware. For example, PCMag found that SteamOS sometimes delivered twice the frames per second of Windows on the same Legion Go S hardware. And in some cases, it even outperformed the Steam Deck OLED.
The only thing the Steam Deck has over the Legion Go S is the OLED model, which has a fantastic, crisp screen. The Steam Deck OLED is my favorite gaming device in most cases, but I would never consider anything else until devices like the Legion Go S got SteamOS. If you want a fairly powerful portable console — and don’t mind changing the OS a bit yourself (models with built-in SteamOS aren’t available at the time of writing) — this is a great deal on one of the Steam Deck’s best competitors.
