New to Prime Day? We’ve got the lowdown on everything you need to know . Sales are accurate at the time of publication, but prices and inventory are always subject to change.
I’ve been reviewing a lot of digital notebooks for Lifehacker lately, and I’ve come to the conclusion that they’re not for everyone. But for the right user — someone who wants a writing screen that recreates the feel of a pen and paper notebook, on a device that can run almost any productivity or reading app from the Google Play store — they’re a godsend. The only downside is the price: With niche appeal comes a hefty price tag.
But right now, you can buy the Boox Note Air 4C, my overall pick for the best digital notebook for most people , on a rare sale during Prime Day. I’ve never seen Boox devices on sale on Amazon, even during previous Prime Day sales, so while a $20 savings on this $530 device isn’t huge, it’s certainly unprecedented. (My favorite e-reader, the Boox Palma 2, is also on sale during Amazon’s big sale .)
A stylish replacement for both a paper notebook and a Kindle.
The Boox Note Air 4C looks like an e-reader, but it’s actually more like an Android tablet with an e-ink screen — its open Android operating system includes access to the Google Play store, so you can download everything from office and productivity tools to apps for reading books, comics, and manga (it’s not marketed as a dedicated e-reader, but it’s a great fit, especially if you read a lot of color content).
The 10.3-inch display offers the same clarity as your average Kindle, with a resolution of 2480 x 1860 at 300 dpi in black and white, and 1240 x 930 at 150 dpi in color. It has a temperature-controlled front light that makes reading easy on the eyes in all conditions. The “octa-core” processor is a 2.07 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 750G, which is a little slow for a modern tablet, but fast enough for most tasks you’re likely to do with the device.
At 5.8mm thick, it’s stylishly thin, and the build quality feels sleek and solid. It has Bluetooth support, dual speakers and a microphone for recording voice memos, and an SD card slot that can expand the 64GB of internal storage up to 2TB.
The real strength of the Note Air 4C, especially when compared to a device like the Kindle Scribe, is its versatility as a digital notepad. Writing on the screen with the included stylus still feels like magic, providing a satisfying writing experience similar to writing on paper, with the slightly textured matte screen offering just enough resistance so you don’t feel like you’re just gliding the tip of the pen across a smooth surface. While it comes with some pretty powerful note-taking software pre-installed, access to the full app store means you can use your favorite program, too.
Premium product at a premium price
All electronic notepads tend to be fairly expensive—closer in price to a high-end iPad than a Kindle—but they’re versatile enough to be a source of entertainment and productivity for the right user. If you’re looking for one, I highly recommend the Note Air 4C, especially if you can get it on sale.
