Threads Gets Its Own Separate Hidden Words Settings

Threads users will soon have more control over what appears (or doesn’t appear) in their feeds. According to a Threads post from Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri, an update to the platform’s Hidden Words feature will allow users to customize what content is filtered separately from their Instagram preferences.
Hidden words themselves aren’t anything new: Threads users can already disable words , phrases, and emojis from their feeds, and automatically filter out comments that contain offensive language. However, this was a global setting that applied to both Threads and Instagram, so you couldn’t have separate content lists to hide or customize these filters in Threads.
Threads is also testing a “flag spoiler” content label to hide spoilers in messages — unless the user taps to reveal the text or image — as well as in DMs. It’s also not the only platform increasing user control over what content they see: TikTok recently expanded its settings that allow users to better personalize their For You feeds, including AI-powered keyword filtering.
How to set up hidden words in topics
To edit hidden words, open the Threads app, tap your profile icon in the bottom navigation bar, then open the settings menu in the top-right corner. Go to Content settings > Hidden words . You can turn on or off Hide common offensive words in replies , which moves the replies to a hidden section below your messages (anyone can tap to reveal them).
Below that, you can tap + New Filter to hide posts with specific words, phrases, or emojis from your feed, as well as replies that contain filtered content. Threads has new options for customizing filters, such as hiding posts posted by anyone or only profiles you don’t follow, and a 30-day “defer” for filtered content you don’t want hidden forever. Related words can be combined into a single custom filter (like spider and spiders).
Please note that the new feature may not be available on your device yet, so stay tuned for app updates.
