Download These Free Vintage Sega Games on Your Mobile Phone Before They’re Gone Forever

Candy Crush , Angry Birds … you name it. My long-standing mobile gaming choice has been vintage Sega, as the company behind my first home gaming console has proven surprisingly willing to port its classics to mobile devices as part of its Sega Forever program. Sadly, now that the program is shut down, it looks like these games will suffer the same fate as the Dreamcast. The good news? You can get them for free for a short time—and keep them forever.
The games were part of “Sega Forever”
Sega Forever started in 2017 as a way for the company to make mobile versions of select games that were released for free. The catch was that all ports came with ads, but you could pay around $2 (the exact price varied by game) in-app to remove them. While there are other ways to play retro games on mobile , the Sega Forever program was certainly one of the easiest. The program technically closed in 2023, and while it has since delisted a few games (RIP Gunstar Heroes ), other games have remained on the storefront and even received regular updates.
Now, Sega is (almost) completely shutting down Sega Forever. In the remaining Sega Forever games, players are seeing new pop-ups warning that support for games that haven’t been removed yet is being discontinued, meaning they’ll likely be leaving the app stores soon. On the flip side, the pop-ups also tell players that they can “continue playing offline,” meaning they’ll not only keep the games, but at least in my testing, the ads will disappear, too, even if you haven’t paid to remove them.
It’s a bit of a win/lose situation, but if you act now, you can get a good selection of fairly competent ad-free mobile ports that are free to play. And based on the previously removed games I have on my phone, you’ll still be able to access them even after they’re removed from the app stores (though not if you delete them from your phone, based on my experience with Beyond Oasis ).
Sega hasn’t made any official announcements about this change, so for now we’re left to rely on in-game pop-ups. With that in mind, it’s unclear exactly when the remaining Sega Forever games will leave the app stores, so you’ll want to act soon. Also note that while the mobile ports of Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 were eventually added to Sega Forever (they had a pre-order price listed on them), they don’t appear to have made it onto the delisting list due to a lack of warnings when opening them.
