Instagram Will Soon Let You Edit Your Grid

For many Instagram users, the grid is sacred. Every post you make goes into the grid in reverse chronological order, so for many users, each post has to be carefully considered. You don’t want a new post to throw your grid out of whack, especially if you’ve carefully crafted a specific theme. Beyond pinning posts or customizing previews, you can’t just edit this grid after the fact.

As it turns out, that’s changing. Instagram announced Thursday that users will soon be able to rearrange and edit their profile grids without deleting the posts to do so. The company is also testing the ability to post directly to the grid, rather than to the main Instagram feed. So if you want a post to appear on your profile but not in anyone’s face, you can do that. I imagine this will be useful for curating every photo in your grid, though you’ll have to accept that silent posts will have far less engagement than photos and videos that are shared in everyone’s feeds.

How to Rebuild Your Instagram Grid

The feature hasn’t launched at the time of writing, but Instagram says it’s coming soon. When it does, you’ll be able to long-press on a photo in the grid, just like you can now, to open a pop-up menu. But what’s new in that menu is an “Edit Grid” option.

What do you think at the moment?

Click on it and a new screen will appear showing all the images in your grid as they are currently arranged. You can then drag each one to wherever you want in the grid. This will likely make it much easier to curate designs in your grid or move older posts to the top of the grid without having to use the pinning feature to do so.
