These Apple Devices Will No Longer Receive Software Updates

Apple announced a ton of great features for iOS 26 , iPadOS 26 , macOS 26 , and watchOS 26 during its WWDC 2025 keynote , but not all Apple devices will get them. While the company has a great history of supporting devices for years, some devices won’t get any of these updates. Here’s a quick list so you can check if your devices will continue to receive updates after this fall.

Three iPhones Missed Out of iOS 26

It’s a good thing I gave away my old iPhone XS Max earlier this year, because it’s one of three iPhones that doesn’t support iOS 26:

  • iPhone XR

  • iPhone XS

  • iPhone XS Max

One iPad Will Not Get iPadOS 26

On the iPad side, the news is mostly good, except for those still holding on to the iPad (7th gen). That tablet won’t get iPadOS 26, but all other iPadOS 18 devices will get the OS update this fall.

Almost all Intel Macs are left behind

The gradual phasing out of Intel Macs continues. Apple is ditching many of them for macOS Tahoe, including:

What do you think at the moment?

  • MacBook Air (2020, Intel)

  • MacBook Pro (2018, all models)

  • MacBook Pro (2019, 13-inch and 15-inch models)

  • MacBook Pro (2020, Intel, 2 Thunderbolt ports)

  • Mac mini (2018)

  • iMac (2019)

  • iMacPro (2017)

Interestingly, macOS Tahoe supports the 2020 MacBook Pro with four Thunderbolt ports, which is bad news for owners of the dual-port model. Apple doesn’t explain why it continues to support only the quad-port models, but I doubt it’s because of the extra ports. It appears that dual-port models came with a 1.4GHz quad-core 8th-generation Intel Core i5 processor, while quad-port models came with a 2.0GHz quad-core 10th-generation Intel Core i5 processor. While you could configure the dual-port with a faster processor, it was still 8th-generation, which I suspect is why Apple is ditching it for the Tahoe.

Apple isn’t dropping support for any watches this year

Fortunately, it looks like all Apple Watch models that are compatible with watchOS 11 will be updated to watchOS 16. While the devices mentioned above will not be updated to the latest software versions, Apple may release security updates or minor software updates from time to time.
