Soon You Too Will Be Able to Repair Your IPad Yourself

Many of us want the power to repair our own devices, and at least with Apple products, things are moving in the right direction on that front. Three years ago, Apple launched its DIY repair program , which finally gave people access to the tools and repair guides they needed to fix broken Apple products themselves. The program started with support for iPhone repairs, and later expanded to include certain Mac computers, the Beats Pill speaker, and the Apple Studio Display. Now, Apple is expanding its DIY repair program to include certain iPad models .

Which iPads can I repair?

Unfortunately, not all iPads are eligible for the DIY repair program at this time. Starting May 29, 2025, Apple will add the following iPads to the program: iPad Air (M2 and later), iPad Pro (M4), iPad mini (A17 Pro), and iPad (A16). This is the list of iPads that Apple currently accepts for official mail-in or service repairs. If you have a different iPad, you’ll have to try your luck at a third-party repair shop like iFixit .

How to Fix a Broken iPad

Start your DIY repair journey by downloading the appropriate repair guide from the Apple website . Explore the guide to learn more about your device and how to repair it, and when you’re ready, order the tools and parts you need.

The good news here is that you can buy or rent Apple-approved iPad repair tools and parts directly from the company. All available products are listed on Apple’s Self Service Repair Store . Additionally, authorized third-party repair shops now also have access to these tools if you’d prefer to get in-person help with your repair but can’t make it to an Apple store. At the time of writing, iPads are still not listed on the site, so exact prices for various repairs are not yet available. In the meantime, let’s take a look at the cost of repairing an iPhone 16 Pro Max to get an estimate of possible prices.

For example, an iPhone 16 Pro Max display repair will cost a hefty $379, while a battery repair will cost $119. In some cases, you can return the replaced part to Apple for a credit, which should ease the burden on your wallet. For the aforementioned display repair, the credit offered is only $19, but for the battery, you’ll get $57, which is pretty good.

What do you think at the moment?

iPads are larger than any iPhone, so you can expect repair prices to be higher for them as well. Note that you may sometimes need to enter your iPad’s serial number before placing an order for parts, so don’t expect to be able to keep a supply of parts on hand.

iPad (and other Apple product) repairs are a great idea for those who are handy with hardware, but even if you’re not one of those people, this announcement is still good news because programs like these allow your friendly neighborhood repair shop to have genuine parts in stock.
