Switch 2 Has Two Great New Features for Battery Health and Safety

After the initial reveal early last month, Nintendo has been slowly releasing Switch 2 announcements, and two announcements recently posted on the Nintendo Today app are particularly interesting. The company said your Switch 2 will have a feature that can limit charging speed when it reaches around 90% to reduce battery degradation. But perhaps more interesting, especially for parents or kids with curious siblings, is that you’ll be able to use a PIN code to lock your Nintendo Switch 2.

Featuring a feature similar to the iPhone’s 80% charge limit, Nintendo Switch 2 will optionally allow you to stop charging the device once the battery reaches around 90% charge. This can help reduce battery degradation on your Switch 2 and prevent future repairs. However, the settings page mentions that your Switch 2 may still be charged to 100% from time to time to ensure the console’s battery level is accurately displayed.

If you have a Switch 2, you can enable this feature by going to Settings > System > Stop Charging Around 90% . This is a great feature considering many people leave their Switch 2 in docked mode almost forever.

Is there someone in your house that you don’t trust with your console? Good old PIN lock is finally here on Nintendo Switch 2. The default screen lock on the original Nintendo Switch required you to press a button three times to unlock the console, which isn’t great from a security standpoint. With the Switch 2, you can lock your console using a PIN code, which is better for those who want to prevent people from using the console without permission.

What are your thoughts so far?

To enable screen lock on your Switch 2, go to Settings > System > System Lock and turn it on. This means you’ll have to enter your PIN every time you wake your Switch 2 from sleep mode. This is the price of increased security. For me personally, the slight inconvenience is worth it, and I’m sure any parents with kids who are always struggling with extra screen time will agree.
