Netflix Is Redesigning Its TV App

Netflix is rolling out a redesign of its TV app that subscribers will see starting May 19th. The update is designed to make it easier to find and select content that you actually want to watch, rather than endlessly scrolling through the service’s library.

What’s new in the Netflix TV app

When your Netflix interface is updated, you’ll see the navigation bar always appear at the top of the screen. There are shortcuts for Search, Shows, Movies, Games, and My Netflix, as well as a central hub for Continue Watching, My List, and Remind Me. The back button on the remote will take you directly to the navigation bar.

The tiles for each piece of content will be much larger and will display detailed information about the title, such as whether it was recently added (or soon to disappear) or whether it won awards, as well as a synopsis, running time, and key actors up front. The app will also provide faster, real-time recommendations as you browse, based on the trailers you watch, the titles you rank up or down, and search queries. Netflix will also highlight live streams at the top of the home screen.

The new features will be available worldwide on most TVs and streaming devices for a few weeks, so if you don’t see them on May 19, they’ll likely arrive soon.

What are your thoughts so far?

Netflix is also reinventing its mobile app experience with vertical video streaming of clips and trailers. Users can click to watch the full show or movie, add it to My List, or share it. The company is testing an OpenAI feature on iOS that makes recommendations based on conversational phrases that describe your mood, so you can search for content using terms other than specific titles, actors, and genres. Initially available only to select users in Australia and New Zealand, it will be available more widely as a voluntary beta this week.
