Upgrade Your Old LG Phone While You Still Can

There was a time when LG was among the largest smartphone manufacturers. Unfortunately, that has now changed: LG pulled out of the phone business in April 2021 , reducing choice for Android customers, especially in the US.

It was a shame because LG made some cool phones back in the day. For example, the V20 had a thin secondary display on the top of the device, while the LG Wing had a full-size second display that swiveled, a design that is still unique in the smartphone market (though not particularly practical). The company has released a lot of smartphones in its time – some good, some great, some forgettable – but in the last four years we have been deprived of a single new LG smartphone.

At the same time, the company did not leave its customers unattended: LG guaranteed suitable smartphones three years of updates . This guarantee seems to have worked as it has now been four years since LG exited the smartphone market. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, just like with LG software support.

RIP LG updates

As reported by Android Authority , LG plans to shut down the servers it uses to release software updates. Once this happens, you will not be able to open the settings app of your LG smartphone and install the latest update supported by your device.

And it’s not just about update servers. LG will also shut down LG Bridge , the software that helps you back up your phone to your computer as well as install updates.

All this will happen on Monday, June 30th – approximately two months from the date of publication of this article. If you have LG devices that have pending updates, you should consider updating them as soon as possible.

What are your thoughts so far?

Of course, 2021 LG phones won’t receive updates to Android 15 or the upcoming Android 16 . LG has been rolling out updates to both Android 12 and Android 13 versions, depending on the phone in question. However, these updates are important because they contain the latest security patches for your specific smartphone. If you’re still using these devices, be sure to install these updates to protect your phone, and keep in mind that there won’t be any future security updates that will protect you from future vulnerabilities.

On that last point, it might be time to consider a new phone if you haven’t already. While this latest update should protect you for a while, the longer you use your smartphone without future updates, the more likely you are to expose yourself to these future vulnerabilities.
