Max Has New Price Levels for “additional Participants”

Max joins the lineup of streaming platforms by limiting the number of users sharing a single subscription to members of the same household—unless you pay $7.99 a month for the “extra member” add-on.

Adding an additional member to an existing streaming plan costs slightly less than purchasing a new, separate subscription, although these users are limited to one profile and one supported device at a time. The best value for money for additional members usually comes with the most expensive plans. For Max, it’s Premium, which costs $20.99 per month.

How does Max’s “extra member” option stack up?

Max subscribers on any plan (except Disney+/Hulu/Max packages) can add one additional member for $7.99 per month when the plan is billed directly through WarnerMedia. Those paying through third-party apps, mobile phone and TV providers are not eligible. Additional members get logged into their own account, but only one profile and stream through one device at a time. Additional participants must also be 18 years of age and located in the same country as the primary subscriber.

As noted, the best deal is the Max Premium plan for $20.99 per month and the decent Standard plan, which costs $16.99 per month. A full Basic with Ads subscription at $9.99 per month is barely more than an additional member, especially if you buy a whole year up front for $100. Additionally, as 9to5Mac notes , Max often runs promotions that drop the subscription price to $2.99 per month.

Other streamers with “additional member” plans

Max isn’t the only streamer to combat password sharing by introducing additional prices for members. Netflix allows Standard plan users to add one member outside the account holder’s household—two for those with a Premium subscription—for $6.99 per additional member per month with ads and $8.99 per additional member per month without ads. Netflix charges $7.99 per month for a standard plan with ads, $17.99 per month for an ad-free subscription, and $24.99 per month for a Premium subscription.

Disney+ subscribers can also add one additional member to any Disney+ plan billed directly to Disney+, as well as packages billed to Disney+ or Hulu. (Hulu + Live TV plans are not included.) Fees range from $6.99 per additional member per month for Disney+ Basic to $14.99 per additional member per month for the Disney+/Hulu/ESPN+ Premium package. The same standalone plans cost $9.99 per month and $26.99 per month, respectively.
