You Can Now Make Google Messages Blur NSFW Images

If you receive nude photos through Google Messages, your Android device will soon detect them and blur them, giving you a sensitive content warning before you can view them. This feature, which applies to all users, also allows you to block numbers that send NSFW images and warns you before you can send or forward them.

If sensitive content warnings are enabled , users will be redirected to a resource page (click on ” Learn why nudes can be dangerous “) and see the option to block the sender’s number. You can open the resulting image (tap Next > Yes, Preview or No, Don’t Preview ) and remove or re-blur the image by tapping the Preview icon.

How to enable Google warnings about sensitive content

Sensitive content warnings are only available for adults, so you’ll need to enable the feature in your Google Messages settings under Privacy & Security > Manage sensitive content warnings . Click the toggle next to Google Message Alerts .

For Android users under 18, sensitive content warnings are enabled by default. Those with supervised accounts cannot control or turn off this feature themselves, although parents can do so in the Family Link app. Teens ages 13-17 who are unsupervised can turn off this feature in their Google Account settings.

What are your thoughts so far?

According to 9to5Google , the feature is currently only available on select Android devices running the Messages beta, so it may not appear in your settings yet. Sensitive content warnings do not currently work for videos.

All detection happens on-device using Android SafetyCore, which means no identifiable data or sensitive content is sent to Google’s servers.
