Massive Insurance Data Breach Exposed 1.6 Million Users

A high-profile data breach affecting a major insurance company administrator may have compromised the personal information of nearly twice as many people as previously reported. A cyberattack on Landmark Admin in May 2024 affected the data of at least 1.6 million people, according to updated data from the Maine Attorney General’s Office.
Landmark Admin is a Texas-based third-party administrator (TPA) for life insurance and annuity companies such as Liberty Bankers Life and American Benefit Life that offer policies nationwide. TPA offers insurers support in the areas of accounting, regulatory reporting, reinsurance and IT. This means that although you may never have dealt directly with a Landmark administrator, your information could still have been exposed.
What happened to the Landmark administrator
On May 13, 2024, Landmark Admin suffered an information leak when suspicious activity was detected on the company’s networks. It was initially reported in October 2024 that the hack had exposed the data of just over 806,00 people, but the company now believes that at least 1,613,773 people (and possibly more) may have been affected.
Compromised information varies depending on the individual and may include the following:

What Affected Consumers Can Do
As always, you can’t retroactively protect leaked information, but you can (and should) continue to follow security best practices when it comes to your browsing, communication, and financial habits to reduce the risk of identity theft.
Review your bank and credit account activity and check your credit report regularly. You can also freeze your credit , place a fraud alert on your file, and block your Social Security number . To avoid falling victim to common phishing tactics, never click on links or download attachments in emails or messages, do not communicate with unknown callers, and go directly to websites by entering URLs (instead of relying on search results).
If you were specifically impacted by the Landmark Admin hack, you are entitled to 12 months of credit monitoring and identity protection services through IDX, which includes a $1,000,000 insurance recovery policy and identity theft recovery services. Landmark is currently notifying consumers and has a helpline at 844-428-5109, which is open from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm ET, Monday through Friday, to resolve issues.
