Grock Can Now Remember Your Past Conversations

The latest trend in AI chatbots is memory. It’s not enough for these models to give you the same quick and detailed answers as everyone else; rather, each one should be personalized to you based on your past conversations. Now it’s Grok’s turn to remember.

xAI, the company behind Grok, announced the chatbot’s new memory feature in a post on X on Wednesday. The company says Grok now remembers your conversations so your future queries will receive personalized responses. In his post, Grok gives an example of a user asking a chatbot to “schedule me a workout for today.” Grok is supposed to draw on past conversations with a user to design a customized workout that fits their needs, including their “interest in fast-paced, high-energy activities and fitness trends such as jumping rope and weightlifting.”

Grock is not the first to implement such a feature. ChatGPT has had a memory option for over a year now . For most of this time, the feature simply remembered facts about you from your past conversations, but last week OpenAI updated the feature to allow ChatGPT to access all past chats, essentially turning your conversation history into one big memory bank. It’s currently not entirely clear how Grok’s memory feature differs from ChatGPT’s: while it appears that Grok can access past conversations rather than storing specific facts, it’s not obvious that the bot will scan all past conversations every time you make a request, as ChatGPT does now. To Google’s credit , Gemini also has a memory feature introduced earlier this year.

This memory feature is also rolling out in beta first to Grok users on the web and mobile apps, but not to the Grok feature in X. xAI, the company behind Grok, says support for X is already in the works.

How to Manage Grock’s Memory

You can access this new memory option from Grok settings on your desktop or mobile app. Go to Data Controls , then turn the toggle next to Personalize with Memories on or off.

If you like Grock’s idea of having access to past conversations most of the time, but know you want to keep some conversations private, you don’t need to keep coming back to this settings page. Leave this feature enabled, but tap the ghost icon in the top right corner of the chat to enable private chat. These conversations will self-destruct after your existence, so Grok will not remember them.
