Microsoft Has a Solution to the Latest Blue Screen Problem in Windows

If your Windows PC crashes unexpectedly and shows a blue screen error, there is now a solution to this problem.

As reported by BleepingComputer , Windows updates released in March and April cause a fatal secure kernel error causing devices running Windows 11 version 24H2 to crash and display a blue screen exception with error code 0x18B indicating SECURE_KERNEL_ERROR.

To address this issue, Microsoft released Known Issue Rollback (KIR), which is a quick and targeted fix for non-security issues. This is a temporary solution as it rolls back previous updates while the company works on a new update to fix the issue. Here’s how to apply it to your device.

What Windows users need to do

If you have a personal or unmanaged work PC running Windows 11, the resolution will be automatically transferred to your device from Windows Update and Microsoft Update in the next day or so. According to the Microsoft support page , restarting may help apply the fix faster. So be sure to restart your computer for this latest update to take effect as soon as possible.

What are your thoughts so far?

For enterprise devices managed by IT departments, the problem will go away once the network administrator installs and configures Windows 11 24H2 and Windows Server 2025 Group Policy KB5053656 250412_03103 . Group Policy can be found under Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > . You will also need to reboot all affected devices for the Group Policy settings to apply.

The blue screen bug follows Microsoft’s major Patch Tuesday update , which patched 134 security vulnerabilities in Windows, including one actively exploited zero-day vulnerability. This is also due to the fact that Microsoft is testing a new blue screen design altogether . Soon enough, future similar failures will look different, although the company’s procedural response will likely remain the same.
