ChatGPT Now Has a “library” of Your AI-Generated Images

Like many AI chatbots, ChatGPT has been offering image generation for some time . You may be very familiar with him as his latest image creation tools recently went viral .

Leaving aside for a moment both the ethics of AI art and its bugs, quirks and inconsistencies , you may have noticed some problems with ChatGPT’s image generation, especially if you’ve used it a lot. Since each image is contained in the ChatGPT conversation in which it was created, it is quite difficult to keep track of all your images unless you manually export and catalog them somewhere else. OpenAI may not yet be able to solve other problems related to artificial intelligence, but it can offer a solution to the last point.

Introducing the ChatGPT Image Library

On Tuesday, OpenAI announced Image Library , a new section of ChatGPT. The Image Library automatically saves all the images you create using the 4o ChatGPT model across various discussions. This way, you won’t have to scroll through previous threads to find a specific image you created. It acts as the default image library on your smartphone: any photos you take or save throughout the day end up in one centralized database.

This tweet is currently unavailable. It may be downloading or has been deleted.

All types of ChatGPT accounts now have access to the image library, including Free, Plus and Pro, and you can access it from both the app and the web app. You will find the “Library” option in the sidebar on the left under the ” Explore GPT ” section. (Although the web app should update itself, you may need to update the ChatGPT app before this option appears.)

The library itself is relatively simple. When you open it, you will see previous generations of images. However, these may not be all your images: I was a little confused to see my last two generations, knowing that I’ve definitely created a lot more with ChatGPT in the past. However, OpenAI states that legacy DALL-E images will not appear here. Only images created with 4o are added to the library, so don’t expect your entire generation history to appear. However, OpenAI says it is currently populating all images for the new library feature, so new old images may appear in your library over the next few days.

What are your thoughts so far?

When you select one of the images in your library, ChatGPT gives you a number of options: Edit, Select, Save, and Share. You can select “Edit” to start a new chat along with the image so you can prompt ChatGPT to make the changes you want to make. Likewise, Select allows you to highlight the part of the image you want to edit, so ChatGPT will only change that selection. You can select “Save” to add the image to your device’s personal library, while “Share” allows you to export the image to any location you wish.

I don’t use ChatGPT for many things, especially image creation, so I can only imagine that this feature will be handy for those who do. However, one pain point I see is the lack of a “delete” option. If you want to delete an image from the ChatGPT library, you need to find the thread where you created it and delete it from there. Although the library allows you to open the branch in which the image was created, you will not be able to delete the image or branch from here. Instead, you need to find the thread by the conversation title in the sidebar and then delete the entire conversation to remove the image or images within. It’s quite complicated and I don’t understand why OpenAI does it this way, so I hope that sooner or later it adds a simple “delete” button to every image in the library.
