This App Can Search for Maps and Addresses Directly From the Menu Bar

Whether you want to quickly check where a city is or get an address to share with a friend, opening a full maps app sometimes feels like overkill. Mappa Mini is a free Mac app from developer Lukas Raggers that lets you do quick searches without taking your full attention.

Simply click the icon in the menu bar and search for any business or location. You’ll see where it is in a small pop-up window, without having to download any app or website. If there are multiple matches, you’ll see them all in a list—click any of them to view the location in context. This is ideal when you need to quickly check where something is.

More detailed information can be obtained by clicking on the three dots to the right of the location. This allows you to add a location to your favorites, open or get directions to a location, or copy an address.

You can copy the entire address or just part of it, such as the full address, zip code, city, or street. You can also copy coordinates or simply copy a link or map image. All of this is useful if you’re texting a friend about where to meet and want to quickly provide context.

What are your thoughts so far?

By default, opening a location launches Apple Maps. If you wish, you can change this so that locations open in Google Maps, OpenStreetMap, Waze or HERE WeGo of your choice. Note that the source map will always be the Apple map—this setting only changes what happens when you decide to open or get directions to a location. There’s not much in the settings – you can change the size of the pop-up window, the radius of the map, and whether the app launches in the menu bar when your Mac boots.

This is not an app that will replace your favorite map app, and it doesn’t try to do that. However, it’s great at what it does: quickly search the map before getting out of your way.
