T-Mobile Class Action Payout Is on the Way

If you’re expecting money from T-Mobile, there’s good news: your check will be on its way soon.
As PCMag noted , the T-Mobile data breach settlement page now states the following : “All litigation has been concluded. Distribution of settlement payments is expected to begin in April 2025.” If payments are made on time, filers can expect their checks to begin mailing sometime this month.
Why was T-Mobile sued?
These payments are related to the August 2021 data breach class action lawsuit. Hackers stole information from tens of millions of current and former T-Mobile customers, including first and last names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers and driver’s license information. T-Mobile initially claimed that hackers only compromised the data of 7.8 million current customers and 40 million former customers, but customers filed a lawsuit claiming the true number was about 76 million.
Although T-Mobile did not admit wrongdoing, the company did settle the lawsuit, agreeing to pay $350 million in damages. In addition, the company had to pay $150 million to improve the security of customer data. The whole disaster cost T-Mobile half a billion dollars.
How much are the payments?
The amount that plaintiffs actually receive from this settlement may depend on the amount of time and money they spent trying to resolve their safety issues. Plaintiffs were required to provide documentation of their efforts, and could be reimbursed for both the money they spent and an additional $25 per hour in compensation for their time—for a maximum payout of $25,000. Alternatively, victims could simply accept the $25 payout to end the whole affair. (If you lived in California at the time, that payment jumped to $100.)
Unfortunately, it is too late to claim payment in this case – the deadline expired on January 23, 2023. If you filed a claim, you should have been contacted in October last year.
I’m sorry if this news comes too late for you to claim money from your lawsuit. However, if you applied before the 2023 deadline, your Monday probably got a little better.
