“LikeTones” – Guitar Tuner Without Advertising and Additional Sales

I’ve been trying to get back into playing guitar and one thing I’ve noticed is that both the App Store and Google Play are riddled with guitar tuning apps that are full of either extra offers or ads. Is there any app that can help you tune your guitar without bothering you?

It turns out there is. LikeTones , a music education company, offers a guitar tuner for Android and iPhone that is free to use , without advertising or upsells. You can open this app, play a string on your guitar, and start tuning. The app automatically detects which string you’re trying to play and tells you whether to raise or lower the tuning.

If you don’t want to use this automatic setting or think it doesn’t quite work, you can click on a line to adjust it specifically. This also plays the note through your phone’s speakers, giving you an idea of what the string should sound like.

Since not all guitars are created equal, this app offers support for six, seven, eight, and 12 string guitars in its settings. There is also support for various alternative settings. If you wish, you can also adjust the reference frequency – this is useful if you need to tune a piano or other non-standard instrument.

It’s a well-designed app and the best I’ve found as a hobby guitarist and professional app recommender. There’s even a built-in metronome.

There are other reliable options. Jon’s Tuner for iPhone also works quite well and cleanly, but doesn’t offer the same flexibility in terms of alternative tuning schemes. The Android version of Jon’s Tuner that I found a link to online doesn’t seem to be on Google Play. However, there is a reliable alternative to Android: Tunerly, which is completely open source. This application offers a simple user interface and settings that allow you to select specific configuration schemes.

However, for most people, LikeTone Guitar Tuner is the best option for now. It works on both Android and iPhone, it’s clean, works well and doesn’t get in your way. Give it a try if you’re even a little unsatisfied with your current guitar tuning app.
