Ninja Crispi Is Changing the Way Party Dips Are Made.
I’m not new to the crispy properties of the air fryer. (Here are some of my favorite models.) The powerful convection heating mechanism heats up leftovers , whips up vegetables , and browns meats quickly and with a sizzling finish reminiscent of a real fryer—without the oil bath. But after using the Ninja Crispi —an air fryer that comes apart for easy storage—my interest in crispy crusts gave way to something completely unexpected: sauces.
Making sauce in the deep fryer is not normal . Dips have always been made on the stovetop: you cook the ingredients in a pot or pan and then pour it all into a baking dish. Maybe you’ll pop it in the oven at the end to get a crispy, cheesy crust. But everything has changed for me: I can now make a big pot of spicy buffalo chicken gravy, fry it, serve it , and store the leftovers, all in one bowl.
Why Dip Works at Ninja Crispi
You can do all this because the Ninja Crispi is designed to be disassembled. The PowerPod (Ninja’s name for a portable convection motor) rises and rises from the cooking chamber. The container is made of transparent tempered glass. It’s pretty enough to be used as a serving dish and small enough to fit in the refrigerator with other containers. The Crispi cooking system comes with two containers (one large and one small), so you can cook in one while storing something in the other. In addition, both containers are equipped with lids. Here’s my full review of Ninja Crispi.
Making sauce in the air fryer may seem gimmicky, but this cooking method has its benefits. It has the minimal cleanup of one-pot cooking, but it cooks from the top down rather than the bottom up. You cook ingredients directly in the air fryer container, stopping to remove the Ninja Crispi PowerPod and stir when needed. When the necessary ingredients are ready, simply add spices and the creamiest ingredients – sour cream, yogurt or mayonnaise. Then sprinkle the cheese on top and turn the PowerPod back on until it melts brown and bubbles. Your air fryer has become a fast and efficient fryer. There is no need to pour the sauce into the new dish – just serve it as is.
Here are my favorite sauces to make in Crispi right now.
Buffalo Chicken Dip Recipe
This sauce comes together quickly and is very easy to eat. The right buffalo sauce is critical, so make sure you like the one you use.
Ingredients:
-
8 ounces buttered chicken breast
-
¼ teaspoon salt
-
Pinch MSG
-
½ cup plain Greek yogurt
-
2 ounces cream cheese
-
2-4 tablespoons buffalo hot sauce (I use Hot Ones buffalo hot sauce)
-
⅓ cup shredded cheddar plus more for topping
-
1-3 slices green onions, white ends and greens separated
1. Place thinly sliced chicken breast on Ninja Crispi grill and sprinkle with salt and MSG. Cook the chicken on the broiler setting for 10 minutes or until it is cooked through but not browned.
2. Pull the grill out from under the chicken and remove it. Shred the chicken using two forks directly into the Ninja Crispi container.
3. Add yogurt, cream cheese, two tablespoons of Buffalo sauce, cheddar, and the white and light green parts of the green onions. Cook for another five minutes on the “Bake” setting.
4. Cheeses and yogurt should be very soft. Mix everything thoroughly and taste to see if you want more hot sauce. Spread the sauce flat and top it with a little more grated cheese. Cook for another three to five minutes on the “Baking” setting. Top with sliced green onions and serve.
French Onion Dip Recipe
I never imagined I could caramelize onions in the air fryer before, but the Crispi makes it work. Don’t skip MSG and Worcestershire sauce—they add the hearty umami flavor we all look for in French onion dip.
Ingredients:
-
2 medium onions (about 14 ounces), sliced
-
2 teaspoons neutral oil
-
1 tablespoon butter
-
¼ teaspoon salt
-
4 ounces full-fat sour cream
-
3 ounces plain Greek yogurt
-
¼ teaspoon onion powder
-
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
-
Pinch MSG
1. Place onion slices in a small Ninja Crispi container. (Do not use a wire rack.) Drizzle oil and salt over top. Stir the onions a little until they come into contact with the oil, but you don’t have to be too precise. Break the butter into pieces over the onion.
2. Cook the onion for about 30 minutes on the baking mode, stirring every three to five minutes. (Caramelizing onions takes time no matter how you do it.) Stir frequently. This step is important to ensure the onions cook evenly. Some ends will still burn, and that’s completely normal. This is actually a good thing .
3. Once the onions are soft and evenly browned, remove the PowerPod and allow the caramelized onions to cool for about 15 minutes. Add sour cream, yogurt, onion powder, Worcestershire sauce and MSG. Serve at room temperature or cover with the Ninja Crispi lid and refrigerate until chilled.
Recipe for a very meaty seven-layer sauce
This sauce is perfect for a party. If you’re a guest, stop at step 5, pack the container with a NinjaCrispi lid, and toss the PowerPod in the car. Connect the capsule and toast the cheese just before serving.
Ingredients:
-
1 pound ground turkey (or other ground meat)
-
½ teaspoon baking soda
-
½ teaspoon salt
-
1 packet taco seasoning (or any other spice blend of your choice)
-
Chopped olives (I used jalepeno stuffed green olives)
-
½ can of refried beans
-
½ cup sour cream (or plain Greek yogurt)
-
2–3 tablespoons salsa
-
Chopped green onions
-
½ cup grated cheddar
1. I sprinkle baking soda on the surface of the ground turkey and use a glove to mix it into the meat. This will help the meat brown and keep it tender.
2. Place meat in Ninja Crispi container without rack. Note: I’m using a small container in the picture, but the sauce almost doesn’t fit at the end. Next time I’m thinking about a larger container.
In the roasting mode, cook the meat for 25–30 minutes, stirring and turning the meat approximately every five minutes. It will look a little gross at first with the top browned and raw meat hiding underneath, just keep cooking. The air fryer cooks from top to bottom, so it’s best to rotate the meat pieces so they cook evenly.
3. When the meat is almost browned and almost cooked, add a packet of salt and seasonings. Finish cooking the meat completely.
4. Add some olives to the meat. Then place more olives on top of the meat. Place the refried beans on top of the meat. Top with sour cream, then a thin layer of salsa, green onions, and top with shredded cheddar. If you are using a small container, gently press the sauce down until it rests below the rim of the dish. You don’t want the cheese touching the PowerPod.
5. Cook the sauce for an additional minute or two on the broil setting to melt the cheese, and serve with chips, crispbread, or between two hamburger buns for a decadent sloppy sauce. Why not?
