Everything You Can Expect to See at Google I/O 2025

Google I/O, the company’s annual developer conference, doesn’t start until May 20, but there’s already anticipation for what will be announced during the event. Here’s what we think might be coming to Google I/O this year, along with details on how to watch.

When and how to watch Google I/O 2025

This year’s Google I/O is scheduled for May 20 and 21, with the first keynote starting at 10 a.m. PT (1 p.m. ET). The event will be broadcast live on io.google and YouTube . Anyone can view keynotes and sessions without registering, although developers can register for free to receive event announcements.

What will happen in Google I/O 2025

The I/O 2025 schedule has not been released, and what we think we’ll see (so far) is based on rumors, speculation, and leaks. However, there are a few things we can reasonably expect —or at least hope.

The first is the launch of Android 16, which Google has already pegged for the second quarter of 2025. According to Android Police, leaks suggest the official release date is June 3, meaning an I/O announcement is likely. Public beta versions have been released with new features for photos, security, device management, foldable device detection, and minor changes to accessibility and performance features.

Another possible release date announcement could be made for Wear OS 5.1, which has some relatively minor new features and stability improvements . And while Google isn’t expected to release Wear OS 6 (which will follow Wear OS 4 in July 2023 and Wear OS 5 in July 2024) or even announce any of its features, it could hint at what we’ll see in Wear OS in the future.

Finally, Google recently confirmed the launch date of the first Android XR headset and revealed more details about its specs and features. This comes after Samsung unveiled an extended reality (XR) prototype during January’s Galaxy Unpacked event . Other hardware news is less likely, as the Pixel 9a is expected to launch in March ahead of the I/O release.

Of course, artificial intelligence is expected to be featured heavily at I/O 2025, and there may also be an update on Project Astra. The “Advanced See-Talk Responsive Agent,” announced at I/O 2024 , is billed as a next-generation AI assistant that can receive real-world data and respond to what it sees. The event program could also include updates to Gemini features such as Circle to Search, AI reviews and integration with Android, search and YouTube, and perhaps even an official transition from “Hey Google” to “Hey Gemini.”
