How to Claim $16.5 Million in Compensation From Avast

At this point, it’s not surprising to learn that the company you trusted with your data has turned around and sold it without your knowledge or consent—as antivirus provider Avast has done for years through its software and browser extensions. While monetary compensation does not offset potential damages, nearly 3.7 million Avast customers are entitled to compensation.

Last year, Avast reached a $16.5 million settlement with the Federal Trade Commission that includes compensation for users who purchased Avast software between August 2014 and January 2020. The Federal Trade Commission found that the company collected information about religious beliefs, health issues, political opinions, financial status and location without user consent and sold it through a subsidiary (also without consent).

Customers can now begin to claim refunds as a result of the settlement. According to the Federal Trade Commission , customers eligible for refunds from Avast will be notified via email between February 24 and March 7. The notice will include a Claim ID, which you will need to complete Avast’s online Claim Resolution Form . If you want more information about the process or need assistance completing your application, you can call the Returns Administrator at 866-290-0165.

To qualify for the payment, a claim must be filed by June 5, 2025. The Federal Trade Commission plans to mail payments in 2026, and the amount will depend on how many people apply for refunds.
