How to Use Samsung Galaxy AI Offline
Starting with the Galaxy S24 series, Samsung has been aggressively introducing Galaxy AI into its devices, adding features like Live Translate and Note Assist to all its latest mobile versions. Most of the time, these AI-powered functions are processed in the cloud for more efficient operation.
However, there is a way for privacy-conscious users who want to try out the Galaxy AI features but don’t want their data sent to Samsung’s cloud servers to do just that. Here’s how to enable on-device processing for Samsung Galaxy AI features.
Why enable on-device processing for Galaxy AI?
The main reason for enabling on-device processing for Galaxy AI is privacy. With all your interactions with Galaxy AI processed locally on your Galaxy device, it ensures that your data is not visible to anyone else. This includes any hackers who manage to infiltrate Samsung’s servers, but as an added bonus, local processing also means these features will be able to work offline .
Samsung’s Knox technology and Personal Data Engine are especially useful here. I’ll start with Knox. It is a legacy security platform designed for business customers that protects personal data stored on Samsung devices from malicious attacks. Since Knox’s initial launch, some features have been made available in Samsung consumer products such as Galaxy S phones, and they help keep your local data safe.
Meanwhile, Personal Data Engine has just been launched on the Samsung Galaxy S25 series. This on-device feature analyzes your data from various apps to learn your preferences and usage patterns, and can then be used for AI-powered features without connecting you to the cloud (it also works with cloud apps, but that’s not really relevant here). While it may seem like the personal data collection feature won’t help with your privacy, all data collected is encrypted and securely stored using Knox encryption methods, and it’s a worthwhile trade-off to get more out of Galaxy AI without sending your data anywhere else.
How to enable Galaxy AI processing on your device
To enable Galaxy AI processing on your device, open Settings on your Galaxy phone. Then scroll down until you find Galaxy AI . At the bottom, you will see a toggle for Process data on device only .
Turn this on and the following Galaxy AI features will switch to local processing only:
-
Help with viewing : summarizing, reading the main points out loud.
-
On-call assistance : Live translation
-
Writing help : chat translation, composer, style and grammar, suggested answers
-
Interpreter
-
Help with notes : translation, transcription
-
Photo assistant : sketch for editing, portrait studio.
-
Transcription assistance : transcript, translation, summary
With this, you now do the processing locally, although note that all features, such as converting a sketch to an image, are available offline. Additionally, for features that work offline, disabling cloud connectivity may slow down results slightly.
