This model runs on an internal (rechargeable) battery, so you won’t have to deal with wiring—unless you want to, in which case it has terminals for your existing doorbell wiring. When the battery runs low, you simply need to remove the device from the door and charge it via USB-C.

As for the camera, it records at 1440 x 1440 resolution and a 150-degree viewing angle, which means you’ll get a complete head-to-toe view of whoever is at your door. It starts recording both when someone presses a button and when motion is detected, but you’ll need a Ring Home subscription ( $4.99 per month ) to access these recordings. Without it, you will only receive live views and notifications. On the other hand, notifications come quickly, and if you can’t answer right away, you can set up the Quick Replies feature to have the doorbell answer for you. Additionally, daytime video looks crisp and colorful, and black-and-white night vision is sharp, although color night vision tends to look a little washed out, as PCMag’s review noted.

It integrates well with Amazon Alexa and supports IFTTT, which means you can connect it to other compatible smart home gadgets. However, Google Assistant and Apple HomeKit are not supported, so if you have a deep understanding of those ecosystems, this may not be for you. You can control the doorbell through the Ring app, where you can adjust motion settings, use two-way audio, view stored videos, and access live viewing. You can also set up quick replies, switch between security modes, connect to other Ring devices, and more through the app.

If you’re considering alternatives, the Arlo Video Doorbell is worth picking up for $59.99 (originally $129.99).
