You Can Now Unsend Outlook Emails on Mac

Gmail has had an undo send feature for years, and it looks like Outlook for Mac will soon be getting a version of it too. While Outlook Recall isn’t technically new, Microsoft is streamlining its implementation into the Outlook for Mac app. Recall lets you unsend an email in Outlook and works on both the free and paid tier of the service, and you can try the beta version right now.

What is Outlook Revocation?

I often sent emails without thinking, only to realize after sending that I could have chosen a different example to illustrate the problem, my tone could have been perceived as a little rude, or that my email had an annoying typo. I once even misspelled my name in an email (I still pray the recipient didn’t notice). In all of these cases, I wished Microsoft would let me quickly unsend an email, and eventually I learned to take a deep breath and review the emails before hitting the dreaded “Send” button.

Now, thanks to the Outlook Recall feature, Microsoft has a way to help you unsend emails. It works with Windows Outlook and web apps, and now the Mac app. This feature should not be confused with Microsoft’s AI Recall, which silently records everything you do on your PC . The Outlook Recall feature is only for returning sent emails.

How to Use Outlook Recall

To use Outlook Recall for Mac, you need to be a Microsoft 365 Insider. To join, visit this page and follow the instructions for your Office account type. Please note that using Insider updates may involve troubleshooting and occasional bugs and glitches as they are not fully ready yet. The program is designed to test features before releasing them to the public, so you may encounter strange problems in your Microsoft 365 apps.

After you join the Insider program, you may need to update Outlook for Mac to version 16.94 or later to start using the review feature. To be sure, check File > Office Account > Update Options .

Outlook recall only works if you and the recipient are subscribed to Microsoft 365 or Exchange in the same organization. If you emailed something to someone outside the organization, you’re out of luck. After you’ve sent an email to someone else in the same organization, follow these steps to use the Outlook Recall feature:

  1. Go to your Sent Items folder in Outlook for Mac.

  2. Right-click the email you want to unsend.

  3. Click “Restore” . This button is also available in the toolbar above your emails.

  4. Return to your inbox and you’ll see a small pop-up notification that the message has been successfully recalled.

  5. Right-click the sent message and select Resend to resend it.

Microsoft has said it plans to introduce the feature in a preview channel (confusingly separate from the beta) this month (February 2025). If all goes well, it should appear in the stable version of Outlook for Mac soon.
