Apple Music Has a Great Deal for New Users Right Now

There are many music streaming services available these days. Many of us subscribe to Spotify or Apple Music , but some may use YouTube Music , Amazon Music or Tidal . They all have their pros and cons, but if price is the most important factor for you, now is the time to check out Apple’s offering.

Apple Music typically costs $10.99 for individuals, $16.99 for families, and $5.99 for students—a pretty standard price for streaming music. Today, however, Apple announced an impressive deal for new eligible subscribers: six months of Apple Music for $2.99. That’s not three dollars a month, but only three dollars.

Who is eligible

That’s a pretty good price for six months of Apple Music, but there are some stark caveats. Firstly, this is for new subscribers. If you have an active Apple Music subscription or have already subscribed but canceled in the past, you won’t be able to take advantage of this offer, and that’s a shame. (Personally, I’d like to spend the next six months on $3 instead of $66.)

Additionally, you are not eligible if you are also currently eligible for a three-month free trial of Apple Music. Apple offers this trial to users who purchase an eligible new Apple device, including iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac, Apple TV, AirPods Pro, AirPods, AirPods Max, Beats headphones and speakers, HomePod, and HomePod mini. If you recently purchased any of these devices, your connected Apple ID is likely eligible for a free trial, so you won’t be able to take advantage of this discount. (Three months of Apple Music free is also great value, though.)

Apple isn’t doing this promotion on a whim. The company (specifically Apple Music) is sponsoring this year’s Super Bowl Half-Time show . Don’t be surprised to see this deal advertised this Sunday.

How to Subscribe to Apple Music for $3

If you’re eligible, you might see the offer appear in the Apple Music app itself. Simply open the app on your iPhone, iPad or Mac and make sure you’re signed in to your Apple account. Apple says the suggestion should appear automatically, but if not, go to the Home tab. When you see the offer, click “Accept Now.” You can also visit the official website of this promotion and click on “Activate Now” to start the process. You have until February 27th to take advantage of this benefit.

Six months for $3 is a lot, but it’s a little dangerous: six months is a long time, long enough to make you forget you’re subscribed to the service. If you don’t cancel your subscription before the end of the six-month period, Apple will automatically bill you $10.99 for the standard monthly plan.

As with any trial or discounted subscription, I always recommend setting a reminder at least a few days before your renewal date. This way, you can be sure to cancel your subscription on time.
