ChatGPT Is Not Working This Morning (It’s up and Down)

If you tried to open ChatGPT this morning and found the service taking forever to load or throwing an error, you’re not alone: ChatGPT has been popping up and down along with other OpenAI services this morning.

The official OpenAI website shows some problems with services from the OpenAI portfolio, but ChatGPT was hit the hardest. As of this writing, all other services are listed as “Running”, with the exception of ChatGPT. The chatbot was previously listed as dealing with a “partial outage,” but OpenAI has since relabeled it as a “major outage.”

The company has six updates listed on Jan. 23 under “Past Incidents.” The first was at 3:54 a.m. PT: “We are currently experiencing an increased level of errors in the API. We are currently conducting an investigation.” OpenAI discovered the issue at 4:26 a.m. PDT and then released a fix at 4:30 a.m. PDT. As of 4:43 a.m., the company said it had resolved an increased level of bugs in ChatGPT and the API, but more issues have since surfaced.

At 5:12 a.m. PT, OpenAI said they had an increased error rate in ChatGPT itself, and at 5:43 a.m. PT the company said it had found the root cause and was working on a fix. This fix was supposedly implemented at 7:09 a.m. PT, but two minutes later the company added another update, saying, “We continue to monitor for any further issues.”

This morning I had mixed results with ChatGPT, which matches the original “Partial Outage” label given to the platform by OpenAI. When I first heard about the outage, I tried to download ChatGPT and after a while I received an error message. However, ChatGPT later updated and I was able to interact with the chatbot.

At the time of writing this article, ChatGPT became unresponsive again. I was able to download it again, but the situation is definitely unstable now.
