These Multi-Tiered Shelves Helped Me Finally Get Organized.

I have too much stuff, but I’m always working on decluttering and optimizing what I have. Ironically, my quest to organize the things I decide to keep often leads to buying something new, and one recent purchase turned out to be really helpful. It’s time to talk about how tiered storage has changed my organizational life.

How I Use Tiered Storage to Organize Everything

I’ve previously written about how much I love acrylic organizers for storing things like makeup , as they keep all the small items organized and easily accessible. I ordered a lot of them, my shopping apps picked up on my inclinations, and a few weeks ago one of them offered something different: multi-tiered acrylic mini shelves.

The algorithm always knows what I want before I even do it, and this time it wasn’t wrong. I obediently added it to my cart. When the smaller kits became available, I set about reorganizing my perfume shelf to try them out. In the end, I liked the result and bought more. Now I can see everything in my closet without taking anything out, and reach inside without knocking anything over.

What I really love about tiered storage shelves (and why I think you should add a few of your own) is that they help me follow the organizational triangle rules I’m always writing about. In particular, the rules advise storing all similar items together, and everything should have a place. Typically this means using containers to group items into categories.

This works fine in some cases, but for frequently used but varied items like makeup, perfume, and accessories, I like to be able to see what I have while I’m getting ready. Ripping apart a storage container and rummaging through it is not ideal. Tiered storage not only allows me to keep everything on the shelf and grouped together, but it also makes it easier to view and access.

Before putting these little shelves together, I had a lot of perfumes casually arranged in small boxes to create my own layered effect. It wasn’t a very stable setup, and I ended up breaking a beloved, far from empty bottle of Glossier You. (RIP.) These more durable, purpose-built shelves will prevent me from making that mistake again.

My Favorite Tiered Storage Ideas

I used my first set of tiered organizers to store the elegant glass bottles of my perfume collection, but they can be used in many different ways. They’re great for storing spices in a cabinet, displaying sentimental items or knick-knack collections, managing office supplies cluttering your desk, or even storing condiments in the refrigerator. Anything you have in abundance and don’t want to dig through when you only need to take one is a candidate for tiered storage. Because they utilize otherwise unused vertical space, these shelves provide better organization in a relatively small footprint, so feel free to get creative.

Another advantage of multi-tier shelving is that they are generally not very expensive. Consider this three-tier stand for $6.99:

You can get one with four levels for $12.99. If you want something more stylish than clear acrylic, you have plenty of options:

Whatever you choose, you’ll definitely appreciate being able to see (and use) all the items you bought to wear.
