Telegram Has a New Verification Strategy to Reduce Fraud

Disinformation and fraud are the sad reality of the Internet in 2024. This “news” account may indeed be spreading lies and falsehoods, while this information from “Google” most likely does not come from the company at all . You really need to be on guard at all times when handling information that flows through your social channels, so it’s helpful when apps and platforms take steps to protect users from untrustworthy sources.

Telegram has a new verification system

This seems to be the reason for the recent Telegram updates . The messenger has a verification system built into the service, thanks to which companies and public figures can register with Telegram and receive a blue badge of honor. This way, when you see content from a famous person or organization, you can be sure that those words actually came from that source. Of course, many platforms (but not all ) offer this type of service. Even Google is thinking about introducing search icons .

But Telegram has a new addition to the way it conducts verification: Once an organization is verified, it can apply to become a ” third-party verifier ,” which allows it to verify other accounts and chats it deems official. These verification icons will be different from the blue checkmarks and will instead appear as blue smiley faces or icons. Any account or chat verified in this way will have a banner on its profile explaining which third party verified it and why.

I fully support this type of review process and hope it catches on. This builds trust in accounts that have already proven their authority on Telegram, and over time will help users quickly determine which accounts and chats are legitimate and which ones to avoid. In the future, you may see a message from an account or chat, and since it doesn’t have that icon, think twice about the message it’s trying to convey.

Other new Telegram features

In addition to third-party verification, Telegram announced a number of other features and changes that will appear on the platform:

  • Message search filters . When searching in the Chats tab, you’ll now see the option to sort messages by All Chats, Private Chats, Group Chats, or Channels to make it easier to find the messages you’re looking for. messages you are looking for.

  • Folder names get their own emoticons . If you’re a Premium subscriber, you can add your own emoji to your chat folder names. You can even replace the text that usually appears here with any emoji you want.

  • QR code scanner in the application . When using the camera in the iOS or Android app, you will also be able to scan QR codes.

  • Collectible Gifts : Telegram ” Gifts ” are small pieces of art that you can share with friends and display on your profile. Now you can improve the gift by making it “collectible”. This will add a new look created by a Telegram artist, as well as a unique background, icon, and number. You can share the collectibles with other users or, if you prefer, auction them off as NFTs. Right now, 20 gifts can be upgraded into collectibles with over 1,400 unique skins.

  • Reactions to official messages . Service messages are alerts you receive when someone joins a group, starts a video call, or sends you a gift. Telegram now allows you to respond to these alerts, which adds interest to these messages that were previously only informational.
