You Should Use Transnomino to Rename and Reorganize Mac Files

Transnomino is a free Mac app that can automate time-consuming manual tasks that you need to know about if you regularly deal with large folders full of files. It takes a bit of a learning curve, but it’s extremely powerful, allowing you to rename a folder full of unorganized photos or music files. You simply drag any folder or collection of files into the app and then decide how you want to rename or organize your files. You can do things like search and replace terms, add a prefix or suffix, or number files. You can also change the path to the files by placing them in different folders.

How you use Transnomino to organize your files will depend on what you’re trying to do. But as an example, I used Transnomino to organize my music files by dragging and dropping an album folder with files that weren’t numbered: I selected the “Set” option, which allowed me to completely replace the current file name, then I clicked on the three dot button to the right of Set Lyrics fields to add track, artist, and song titles to the file name, adding spaces and dashes between them yourself until they look right.

Instead of completely replacing the filenames, I could use the Prefix option to add the track number to the beginning of the filename. If I had multiple albums in the same folder, I could use the Path option to put songs from different tracks into different albums. The point is that you can spend a little time setting up what you want to name your files, instead of spending a lot of time renaming them manually.

There’s also different metadata you can get depending on the file types you’re working with: if you’re working with photos, EXIF data is available, and there’s even support for converting GPS coordinates to street addresses, which means you can do things like things like organizing photos based on where they were taken.

The specifics will always vary depending on your needs, but in general you can use metadata inside files to rename them. There’s also support for things like wildcards and regular expressions, allowing you to run even more complex renaming schemes. Ultimately, Transnomino is an app you need to know about if you regularly deal with large folders filled with files. It can quickly automate their organization, which will greatly simplify working with them.
