Google Has a Hidden ‘squid Game’ You Can Play Right Now
The Squid Game is back for a second season – whether it needs one or not. And like many of its high-profile series, Netflix is eagerly promoting the next installment ahead of its December 26 release. It seems the streamer has turned to Google for one of these promotions to launch a “hidden” Squid game on the search engine. And it’s actually quite fun.
How to play the “hidden” game Google Squid
“Hidden” is in quotes here because it really isn’t hard to find the game. In fact, if you have a passing interest in the popular Netflix show, you could easily stumble upon it yourself. All you need to do to launch the game is search “Squid Game” on Google. When you do this, you’ll get the usual results for Squid Game, including the cast, season two release date, and an endless supply of articles and reports.
But in addition to these standard results, you’ll notice that a Squid game symbol appears at the bottom of the screen, containing the show’s three iconic shapes: a circle, a triangle, and a square. Click this symbol and you’ll launch the Red Light Green Light game overlaid on top of the search results.
Whether you’ve seen the show or not, the rules are simple: you control a small group of six players who all need to get to the giant robot doll at the top of the page. When the doll is not looking, you approach it; when the doll turns, you stop moving. If you move while the doll is looking at you, you will “lose.” However, unlike the series, your character will simply walk away with a disturbing expression on his face and will not be brutally gunned down. (At least not on screen.)
There is a green button that allows your characters to advance and a red button that stops them. The doll ” sings ” the same short song and turns around as soon as it finishes singing, but will sing at different intervals so it can be difficult to judge. I actually found it easier to mute the doll and just watch it move instead.
The funny thing is that even when you “win”, your characters turn around with the same anxious expression as if they lost. These games, man. They are not for the weak.
This isn’t the first time Google has implemented a hidden game or feature in its search engine or web browser . The most famous, of course, is the Dinosaur Game, which appears in Chrome when you don’t have an Internet connection. But Google has a lot of games and experiences built into it . (Go ahead and search for “make a barrel”.)
