Everything We Know About Apple’s Foldable IPhone and IPad Rumors
Now that Apple has finally brought OLED to the iPad in the form of the latest iPad Pro, its next target seems to be foldable devices. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the iPhone maker is working to release a foldable iPad by 2028, and the Wall Street Journal reports that the company hopes to bring a foldable iPhone to market in 2026.
The iPad news comes courtesy of Gurman’s Power On newsletter , where the reporter’s (unnamed but often reliable) sources tell him that the foldable iPad will be a whopping 18.8 inches and will resemble “two iPad Pros side by side.” For comparison, the current iPad Pro measures 13 inches, and even the MacBook Pro only reaches 16 inches.
This isn’t the first time Gurman has reported on a foldable iPad, as he previously talked about a 20-inch iPad designed to function like a MacBook, but with a touchscreen instead of a keyboard. This rumor originally came from display supply chain consultant Ross Young , but Gurman’s sources confirmed to him that Apple was considering such a device. If it comes to market, Young says, it will likely be in 2026, although Gurman’s latest rumors seem to indicate that a 2028 device could replace it.
As for the foldable iPhone, the Wall Street Journal reports that it will have a larger screen than the 16 Pro Max and should hit the market in 2026. Technically, The Information was the first to report on this phone back in July, and Gurman also weighed in on the speculation, saying we shouldn’t expect it “until 2026 at the earliest.”
As for why these devices are predicted to be so far ahead when companies like Asus and Samsung are already releasing foldable tablets and phones, it’s likely because Apple is working on a “nearly invisible fold” that could be just the thing. what it takes to compete in the market. increasingly intense market space .
Getting back to the iPad, Gurman wasn’t technically the first to report the rumored 18.8-inch device, as research firm Omdia previously predicted it was in development . However, Gurman’s account lends considerable credence to this idea.
Gurman also says that the device, while not confirmed to run macOS, “will have elements of both,” including being “advanced enough to run macOS apps.” This should help justify the size a bit – like the Asus Zenbook Fold line, Apple’s foldable tablet will likely be able to connect to an external keyboard, allowing it to also serve as a sort of portable desktop environment. However, Korean publication The Elec previously claimed that Apple is also considering 7- or 8-inch foldable tablets, although the timing of that publication doesn’t completely line up with other reports, so Apple may yet surprise us all.
