This Smartwatch and Fitness Tracker for Kids Is Now 22% Off
The Fitbit Google Ace LTE , now $179.95 (down from $229.95), is designed with kids in mind and features a bright OLED display and a Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 processor powering a host of sensors. It’s durable, with a durable Corning Gorilla Glass 3 screen and 5 ATM water resistance, making it more than capable of withstanding everyday bumps and splashes. However, the real value of this smartwatch only comes when paired with an Ace Pass subscription ($9.99 per month), which unlocks calling, texting, GPS tracking, and motion-based games. Without a subscription, the watch is essentially a glorified pedometer, a role the more affordable Fitbit Ace 3 ($84.95) can easily fill.
Games are designed to get children moving by linking progress to activity goals. Kids can customize their Idgie, a Tamagotchi-like character, and earn daily rewards for being active, with the watch limiting what they can unlock each day to maintain balance and avoid overwork. On the downside, this PCMag review notes that games can load slowly and controls are sometimes unresponsive. It also doesn’t include a camera – some parents may see this as a privacy benefit, while others may miss it for selfies or video calls.
For parents, features include GPS tracking via Google Maps (location data is stored for 24 hours and is accessible only to parents), and the ability to call or text up to 20 trusted contacts, including an emergency auto-call feature if a parent does not want it does. If you don’t answer, it provides extra peace of mind. Additionally, School Time mode is another thoughtful addition that mutes games during certain hours while still maintaining activity tracking and essential communication. However, the Ace LTE lacks sleep tracking, which may disappoint parents given its price. Additionally, since the battery life is around 16 hours, the watch will need to be charged every night, which may seem like a disadvantage for busy families.
