I was a Keurig guy for a long time and was happy with it. I loaded the K-Cup into my single-serve machine , and within two minutes my morning was saved. However, I had two problems with my Keurig: First, I hated the daily waste of K-Cups, even though “recyclable” cups came on the market a few years ago. And secondly, using the machine was a bit cumbersome when trying to make more than one cup at a time. For example, it would be nice to fill a travel mug, but one cup is not enough and two cups risk overflowing. And if we had several guests who wanted a cup of coffee, they would have to wait in line, since my machine prepared exactly one portion at a time. So I started looking at a more traditional coffee maker—one that could make an entire cup of coffee with just one paper filter—so that if I had guests over or wanted to fill a travel mug, it wouldn’t be a problem.
Although I would probably be satisfied with a standard coffee maker, I was interested in the Moccamaster Technivorm and never had the opportunity to look for another coffee maker. This thing has it all: it’s stylish, it brews 40 ounces of coffee at a time, and it supposedly optimizes coffee brewing speed to extract the “full flavor” of the coffee and maximize its “complexity, flavor and aroma.” I have no scientific or expert training when it comes to “extracting” coffee, I just like a good cup and this thing produces a pot of good coffee every time. ( This YouTube review does a good job of explaining the device in more detail.)
When it comes to making coffee, I quite often use the Mockamaster’s tips that are posted online (although they should also come in paper form with your machine). It gives the recommended ratio of water to ground coffee for whatever amount of coffee you want to brew (I usually brew a liter at a time, which equates to six scoops of two tablespoons of Moccamaster, or 55 ounces), as well as advice on what to do if the strength fell: if the coffee is too strong, Moccamaster recommends adding hot water. But if it’s too weak, Moccamaster doesn’t recommend adding more ground coffee: instead, he advises “exploring different coffees or roast profiles to find the one that best suits your taste.” To me, this sounds like a very polite version of “your coffee is garbage, dude.”
From a beginner’s perspective, everything about this Moccamaster machine is amazing except the price. This thing retails for $359, which is expensive the last time I checked. That’s why when I saw Technivorm’s Black Friday sale, I had to write about it.
Unfortunately, the deal is already faltering. Amazon originally had this machine for half price. But since then, the 50% discount is only available on the Polished Silver color. For most other colors the value has been reduced to 30%. At the time of writing they are Apricot, Black, Matte Gold, Butter Yellow, Candy Apple Red, Matte Black, Matte Silver, Midnight Blue, Cream, Orange, Pink, Stone Grey, Teal and Pepper Yellow. Pistachio is currently 31% off and Rose Gold is 36% off.
If you don’t have a color preference, get polished silver now: you’ll be spending $179.50 on an amazing coffee maker that would normally cost twice as much. However, I would recommend viewing the different colors before purchasing to see if the deal has changed at all since this article.
