Signal Is Now a Great Encrypted Alternative to Zoom and Google Meet

Signal , one of the best encrypted messaging apps currently available , has also emerged as a truly reliable alternative to Zoom and Google Meet. Although Signal has supported group video calls since 2020, the app has now added useful features that make it more useful as a video conferencing tool. These updates mean that Signal is now a free, reliable and secure video conferencing service that can handle the best of them. It allows you to add up to 50 people to a group call, and there is no time limit for each call. Here are the best of its new features:

Separate tab for calls

This may seem like a small change, but it’s very useful for organization. The new calling tab makes it easier to make and manage calls across the Signal desktop and mobile apps.

Create links for your meetings

Signal now lets you create links for video calls. Go to the Calls tab and select Create Call Link to get started. On the next page, select a meeting name, decide whether you want to open it to everyone or require admin approval for participants to join, then copy or share the link. You won’t enter the meeting until you click the Join button. This means you can create a call link at any time and join the meeting later. These calling links can be reused, and if necessary, you can use the calendar app to schedule a recurring meeting with the same link.

Support raise hand and reaction emoji

During video calls, you’ll now see a “Raise Hand” button, which allows you to politely let others know that you have something to say. Zoom has been using this feature for several years now, and it’s great to see Signal adopting this feature. You can also send emoji reactions during group video calls. If multiple people use the same emoji during a conversation, Signal says you’ll see a series of emojis on your screen.

Improved call settings

The desktop version of Signal now lets you more easily view other participants by choosing a grid view, sidebar view, or speaker view. To switch the camera and microphone, simply use the call control tab located at the bottom of the screen. This interface is similar to other video conferencing apps such as Zoom and Google Meet.
