Pixel 9 Pro Foldable Display Is Incredibly Expensive to Repair

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is expensive. This is not news to those who keep a close eye on smartphones, especially foldable models. As David Neild explains in a review for Lifehacker , Google has made some great options for its latest Fold device, but at $1,799, these things still cost too much money.

It turns out that these costs may extend beyond the initial purchase of the phone. Smartphones are slabs of glass that we carry with us everywhere, so when we inevitably drop them at some point, they can break. However, when you break your Pixel 9 Pro Fold’s display, it will cost a lot more than you might expect, even if you have experience with the Fold’s repair cost history.

As spotted by 9to5Google , iFixit now has official parts listings for the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. If you need to fix your Fold’s internal screen—say, if you dropped it while it was open in tablet mode —it’ll cost you $1,199.99 (or $1,206.99 for the entire “Fix Kit”). Compare that to a replacement part for the original Pixel Fold’s internal screen, which costs $899 on iFixit or $909.99 for the Fix Kit.

$1200 for a display is a huge amount. For that price, you can buy an iPhone 16 Pro Max, a MacBook Air , or four Nintendo Switches. $1,200 for the internal display alone means that if you break and fix your Fold 9 Pro, you’ll be spending $3,000, all on an Android device.

Here’s if you’re not covered: Google offers insurance for the Pro 9 Fold for $15 a month. This covers up to two incidents of damage in a 12-month period. So you could potentially get a $2,400 Google bill for just $180 in insurance fees. While no one wants to add an extra $15 a month to their bill, it’s a lot better than cutting the MSRP on that part of the display.

Still, this is a staggering number. Again, that’s $300 more than Google’s previous foldable indoor display, and when you look at the competition, it gets even worse. Samsung charges $499 to repair the Galaxy Z Fold 5’s internal display, which is a fraction of the cost.

My advice? Get insurance and keep a stranglehold on this thing.
