The Creator of Flappy Bird Has Nothing to Do With Its Remake
It appears that the Flappy Bird “remake” has nothing in common with its original creator. Dong Nguyen, the creator of Flappy Bird , stated that he has nothing to do with the team working on the new game. Nguyen took to X (formerly Twitter) to say: “No, I have nothing to do with their game. I didn’t sell anything. I also do not support cryptocurrency.”
Last week the game was unveiled by a group of developers calling themselves The Flappy Bird Foundation. In a press release, the organization said it acquired the trademark from GameTech Holdings LLC. Nguyen’s name was not mentioned anywhere on Flappy Bird’s new website or promotional materials, leading some to question how GameTech got its hands on the intellectual property in the first place.
In X, a user named Samperson found more information about how this all happened. According to their post, Nguyen did not renew the Flappy Bird trademark, which resulted in the US Patent and Trademark Office deeming it abandoned and allowing GameTech to obtain it for free.
Nguyen’s attacks on cryptocurrency may seem irrelevant given that the new Flappy Bird team has not yet publicly discussed any cryptocurrency integration. However, user X named dusk dug into the accounts, followed by a new Flappy Bird account that includes many cryptocurrency-related accounts. Cybersecurity researcher Varun Binivale also discovered hidden cryptocurrency-related pages on the Flappy Bird website . The Verge discovered that one of the cryptocurrency pages from the game’s website is archived here .
These are all warning signs for people who just want to play the game they remember. At the moment, the game has not been released and it is unclear how the developers plan to monetize it. Be careful until the game comes out and the developers prove their reliability.
