This Application Quickly Compresses Any Image Without Reducing Quality

Not enough space on your hard drive or cloud storage? Your images may be taking up space they don’t need. A free Mac app called ImageOptim that I found on App Addict can quickly reduce the size of any image file without losing quality. There is also a web version for those who don’t have a Mac.

Using ImageOptim couldn’t be simpler: just drag and drop images into the interface and watch them shrink.

By default, this compression is lossless, that is, without loss of quality. This is done using many different free and open source image compression tools – such as MozJPEG , pngquant , Pngcrush , 7zip , SVGO and Google Zopfli . These tools remove redundant information from images, which means that there is no loss in image quality when using this tool. If you want to keep your files even smaller, there is support for lossy image compression in the settings.

What I like about this app is how it supports many macOS features. There is support for Apple shortcuts, which means you can create automations that compress images before publishing them. For example, the Services menu is also supported. This means you can optimize an image by right-clicking it in Finder, checking the Services menu, and clicking Optimize Image .

And there are also privacy benefits. ImageOptim removes all EXIF data by default. When you take a photo with your phone, all sorts of information is included in the metadata, including your location and the make and model of your camera. ImageOptim removes this, which can protect your personal information.

Overall, this app does one thing and does it very effectively. I recommend it if you’ve ever had trouble loading an image or just want to free up space on your hard drive or server.
