Gemini Will Now Take Notes for You During Google Meet Calls

Google has made many announcements about the future of artificial intelligence. The company wants AI to be the new face of search (though that rollout is going pretty poorly ), and it wants AI to be the selling point of its newest smartphones, but as Lifehacker associate tech editor Michelle Erhardt discovered, not even the Pixel 9 Pro’s AI the features seem half-baked .

As tired as many of us are of frustrating experiences with AI, the beneficial applications of this technology are still more than welcome. Perhaps the same thing will happen with “take notes for me,” a new Google Meet feature that’s finally arriving this week .

“Take Notes for Me” may not be the flashiest title, but it’s apt. When enabled, Gemini, Google’s AI platform, automatically organizes and summarizes everything said during a Google Meet video call. Once the call ends, Gemini will save your notes to the meeting organizer’s Google Drive and attach the file to a Google Calendar event so anyone invited to the meeting can check it out.

Gemini will include a summary of the call in its meeting notes before moving on to a more detailed summary of what was said, but you can also view the “so far” summary during the meeting. If you join a meeting late, you will be able to catch both the gist of the discussion and the last thing that was said. You can evaluate these summaries during the meeting, so if you feel Gemini missed the mark with their interpretation, you can give them feedback.

Google has been testing the feature since at least April and began rolling it out to eligible Google Workspace customers on Tuesday. It should be available to all eligible users by September 10th.

How to Try Google Meet “Take Notes for Me”

To take advantage of this unique AI feature, you or your company must be a Google Workspace subscriber with a qualifying add-on plan. This includes:

  • GeminiEnterprise

  • Gemini EducationPremium

  • AI Meetings and Messaging

Let’s say your work or school paid for one of these add-ons. This feature will be enabled by default on the admin side, so you won’t have to request it from your IT department. On your part, you will need a computer or laptop. (This feature is not currently available on mobile devices.) Gemini will also only be able to transcribe conversations in English.

With all of this in mind, start a Google Meet call, then tap Take Notes with Gemini , which looks like a blue and purple pen icon. Select whether you want Gemini to transcribe the call and whether you want the AI to record the meeting itself, then select Start Taking Notes . You can manually update the “Current Summary” by clicking the spinning arrow . All participants will have the option to click Stop Taking Notes at any time when the conversation is set to private or confidential if the call is not set to host controls.
