Fitbit Premium Members Will Soon Be Able to Take Peloton Classes for Free
Even if you buy a Peloton bike, you’ll still need a membership to access the company’s classes, but maybe not if you’re also a Fitbit user. Peloton announced this week that it will begin offering its digital classes to Fitbit Premium members starting in September. Details are scarce at the moment, but here’s everything we know.
What types of Peloton classes will be available to Fitbit Premium members?
If you’re used to thinking of Peloton as an exercise bike , you may have missed that the company offers many types of video classes on its devices and through its app . This means you can watch a spin class video while riding the stationary bike at the gym, or pick up some dumbbells and do some strength training in your living room.
As part of this partnership, Peloton says it will give Fitbit Premium members access to classes covering:
-
Strength
-
Pilates
-
Running
-
Boxing
-
Cycling
-
Barre
-
“And one more thing”
How can I access these classes?
Peloton didn’t respond to my questions about the details, but the announcement states that “[n]ew content will be added to the app gradually,” suggesting they are referring to the Fitbit app . The Fitbit app already includes a library of workouts available to Premium members, so the plan is to add Peloton content to that library.
There’s no word yet on whether Peloton content will eventually include everything you can get from the Peloton app, or whether it will be a limited or rotating selection.
Who gets access to these classes?
Peloton said the classes will be available to Fitbit Premium members in the US, UK, Canada and Australia, and that this is a “multi-year” partnership.
The announcement also noted that “a select group of Peloton classes will also be available to Fitbit users without a Premium subscription.” The companies have not yet announced any details about this, such as how many classes this set will include.
How does the cost of Fitbit Premium compare to the cost of the Peloton app?
If you’re wondering whether it’s worth upgrading to Fitbit Premium for activities, I’d say wait and see how much content Fitbit Premium users actually get access to. But if you want to count right now:
-
Fitbit Premium costs $9.99 per month or $79.99 per year. Fitbit devices come with a free 6-month Premium subscription.
-
Access to Peloton App+ costs $24.99 per month and gives you access to Peloton’s full library of classes, including as many cycling, treadmill, and rowing classes as you want.
-
Access to the Peloton App One costs $12.99 per month, and its biggest limitation is that you’re limited to only three cycling, treadmill, or rowing classes each month. Other activities such as strength training, HIIT, yoga and outdoor running are not limited.
Whether the Peloton app is worth switching from will depend on how much of its content is available to Fitbit Premium users. If it ends up being a fairly complete library, or if you only want to take classes occasionally, Fitbit Premium is the best deal on paper. But the companies haven’t revealed all the details yet, so we’ll have to wait and see.
Will Peloton members get anything out of this partnership?
The ad included one sentence about current Peloton members: “Throughout the partnership, Peloton members will receive special offers on Google Pixel Watch and Fitbit Charge 6 devices.”
