Made by Google 2024 Probably Won’t Be an Artificial Intelligence Revolution

Google takes a slightly different approach to its major product announcements than most other companies. Unlike other companies, which mostly try to maintain an air of secrecy before the keynote, Google simply accepts all the leaks and rumors by showing off the devices themselves before “Made by Google.”

That’s why we know for sure that Google will show off the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro Fold this year. The two phones are featured on the company’s own Made by Google website , but actually act as stand-ins for Google’s larger product: artificial intelligence. Here’s what to expect and how to watch:

Pixel line 9

Google has turned Pixel into a major competitor in the smartphone market. The company is now introducing the ‘9’ series and rumors suggest we will see four new phones .

Let’s start with the standard Pixel 9, which Google has yet to comment on. It is rumored to come with a 6.3-inch display, 12GB of RAM, a 50MP standard camera and a 48MP ultra-wide camera. What we saw was its more expensive companion, the Pixel 9 Pro. Google hasn’t provided any specifications yet, but again, there are rumors that it could come with a higher resolution display, 16GB of RAM, and three rear cameras (an additional one would be a 48MP telephoto camera). This year we may also get a Pixel 9 Pro XL variant with a display size of up to 6.8 inches. (The rest of the specs are likely the same as the Pixel 9 Pro.)

Last but not least, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Despite the “9” in its name, the Fold is actually only Google’s second attempt at a foldable phone. Rumors suggest it could have a 6.3-inch display on the outside and an 8-inch display on the inside, along with 16GB of RAM and three rear cameras: a 48-megapixel wide-angle, a 10.8-megapixel ultra-wide and a 10.8-megapixel telephoto camera. . If you’re looking for the best cameras, you’ll want the standard Pixel Pro.

All new Pixels feature Google’s latest proprietary chip, the Tensor G4. This means that no matter which Pixel you choose, you should expect the same, if not identical, performance across all devices. However, the G4 is rumored to not provide a significant performance boost over the G3 , so your Pixel 8 probably won’t be much slower than the Pixel 9.

However, the real advantage can come from artificial intelligence.

Android 15 and Gemini

Google’s next major Android update, Android 15 , is just around the corner and will likely get some attention tomorrow. We already know quite a lot about Android 15 , including new features like Private Space , which gives you a hidden place on your phone to store sensitive apps and files.

But it seems almost certain that any discussion of Android, Android 15 or otherwise, will be about artificial intelligence. There are rumors that Google will call its future artificial intelligence efforts ” Google AI “, which immediately draws parallels with Apple’s ” Apple Intelligence “. And as with Apple Intelligence, some of Google’s new features will likely be exclusive: We’re expecting some AI features specific to the Pixel 9 in this announcement, meaning they’ll require the Tensor G4 chip to run. These features include Add Me, a feature that can use artificial intelligence to add additional people to a photo; Studio, which looks like an AI image generator; and Pixel Screenshots, which can scan screenshots in your library, turning them into an easy-to-search database.

I’m all for useful AI features, especially those that improve privacy and security . However, I don’t see anything in the rumors that would suggest that Made by Google 2024 will be an AI revolution for Google. The company is still recovering from the disastrous implementation of AI Reviews , and had to pull out of advertising Gemini during the Olympics, so I’m not sure we’ll see the future of artificial intelligence tomorrow. Instead, we may see some useful updates for Pixel users, especially those investing in Google’s upcoming line of devices.

However, we’ll have to see what Google actually decides to announce.
