IPhone Can Finally Record Video While Playing Music

Every time I record a video or go to the video tab in my iPhone’s camera app, the phone automatically pauses whatever music I’m listening to. This made sense in the early days of the iPhone, when you didn’t want the sound from the speaker to interfere with your recording. However, the world has changed a lot, headphones exist, and forcibly prohibiting people from listening to music while recording a video no longer makes sense. With iOS 18, Apple will let you play music even while recording video.

Why You May Need Sound When Recording Video

If you listen to music on your AirPods, this will in no way interfere with video recording and playback. If you have an always-on speaker system that you turn on along with your phone, you might not want to disrupt the environment just because your cat is so cute. Whatever your reason, you’ll be able to continue listening to music or audiobooks while recording.

How to Record Video While Audio is Playing in iOS 18

Setting up this feature takes just a couple of simple steps. The most important is the availability of iOS 18, which is currently available in public beta . Please note that installing the beta version may cause your phone to become unstable, so it’s best to keep it on a backup device if possible.

After updating the OS, go to Settings > Camera > Audio Recording and turn on Allow Audio Playback . This will allow you to play audio even while recording video. You’ll have to get used to the fact that any sound from your speakers will be heard in your recording – a good next step might be for Apple to allow us to only allow sound when connecting external sound systems.

Play audio while recording video in iOS 17

For older versions of iOS such as iOS 17, there is a workaround that also allows you to record while listening to music. To do this, you need to record a QuickTake video . As the name suggests, QuickTake lets you quickly shoot video without having to go to your iPhone’s video tab. To use it, open the Camera app and hold the shutter button. It will turn red and your iPhone will start recording video. Release the button to stop recording. You can drag the red button over the lock icon to continue recording video without holding the button. QuickTake is available on iPhone XS and newer models.
