Use This App to Finally Cook All Those TikTok Recipes
Like so many other things, the cooking world has moved to TikTok and Instagram Reels. It used to be that you would go to a website or someone’s blog looking for recipe inspiration. But now these sites are filled with long-winded stories, advertisements and food descriptions, making them difficult to scroll through.
During these trying times, cooking shows, celebrities, and even enthusiasts have turned to TikTok and Instagram Reels to share recipes, tips, and tricks. Since the videos on these sites are only a minute long, the focus is on the dish. But here you run into another problem. The videos are too damn short. And if you’re not careful, you’ll end up watching the same 45-second video 17 times in a row, just trying to figure out how this guy made Turkish eggs for breakfast.
Or maybe you’re like me and my partner, who see all these great recipes on Instagram and save them for later, never to return to them. This is where third-party cooking app Pestle can help.
How to Save TikTok Recipes to Pestle
Pestle is a recipe organizer that automatically formats any recipe you share. This could come from one of those long blogs or a recipe you created yourself. Now, with the latest update, Pestle uses in-device AI to quickly transform Instagram Reels captions into full-fledged recipes that you can easily follow with the app’s step-by-step cooking guide.
This will work as long as the recipe title has a list of ingredients and recipe steps written in some form (or contains a link to the recipe). Your source video doesn’t have to follow any specific format, thanks to artificial intelligence. Pestle will run the title through its system, extract the recipe, and show it to you in a convenient format that you can easily follow. The video will also be added to the recipe.
Because the app does this on the device rather than checking the cloud, the whole process is surprisingly fast. Everything happens in just 5-10 seconds, after which your recipe will be ready in the application. I tested this on five different videos, each with different recipe captions, and it worked every time.
Here’s how it works. Click the Share button on the video, then select the Share option. Select the Pestle app . If you don’t see it, go to the Advanced section and select the Pestle app.
The Pestle app will ask you for the name of the recipe. Once this is done, it will automatically fill in the ingredients and steps from the video caption. Review it to make sure everything looks correct. You can also click the Edit button at the top to add or remove any part of the recipe. And that’s it, the recipe will be saved in the Pestle app, and now you can get into the habit of opening the app every time you feel like you don’t know what you want to cook tonight.
Pestle has a nice interface where it will show you the recipe steps in a huge font so it is easy to follow while you cook. The nice thing is that when an ingredient is mentioned, you can also click on it to see its quantity. For example, in my Turkish Eggs recipe, by clicking on the eggs text you will see that I need four free range eggs to make this recipe work. In cooking mode, you can also switch to the ingredients list and mark the foods you have chosen to cook. The app also has a voice mode for hands-free cooking, so you can say words like “Next” to move on to the next step without even touching your iPhone or iPad.
The app allows you to store 15 recipes for free, but to get unlimited recipes, you can upgrade to Pestle Pro, which costs $1.99 per month or $19.99 if billed annually.
