How to Make TikTok Famous Olympic Chocolate Cupcakes
Mass-produced food, especially for large events like the Olympics, has never had a stellar reputation. Many Olympic athletes have written about the food offerings in Paris, but none have gone as viral as Henrik Christiansen . This Norwegian swimmer has become obsessed with one thing (when he’s not swimming): chocolate cupcakes. He posted several videos featuring chocolate cupcakes and dedicated himself to making the cupcakes part of his Olympic legacy.
While I haven’t tried these cupcakes from my place here in Brooklyn, I have seen them, and as creepy as this sounds to type, I have seen Henrik eat them – and I have to say, I get it. They look damn amazing. Eater’s Kelin Carolyn Zhang identified them as Maxi Muffin Chocolat Intense from Coup de Pates. You can see they’re chocolate, they’re cupcakes, and there’s a gooey chocolate center.
You don’t like to see cheating at the Olympics, but these are desperate times. That gooey chocolate cake in the cafeteria at this year’s games seems to be winning everyone’s heart, and I don’t feel like making it from scratch, so I did what any hard-working person making their way to victory does: I cheated. And you can too. Here’s how you can eat TikTok’s famous Olympic cupcakes tonight, just in time to turn on the games.
How to make Olympic chocolate muffin?
You don’t need much to replicate the look of this chocolate cupcake. The defining factors are the chocolate muffin with chocolate chips on top and the chocolate ganache center. Easy. Grab a bag of Nestle Toll House chunks, a box or bag of store-bought chocolate cake mix, and some heavy cream.
1. Prepare the muffin dough.
Line a muffin tin with paper liners and preheat the oven according to package directions. Store-bought muffin mix produces a soft, smooth product and is quite difficult to mess up. Prepare muffins as directed on package. Place them in muffin tins.
Note: If your store only carries chocolate chip cupcakes, you can easily make them chocolate by adding two tablespoons of cocoa powder to the dry mixture for every seven ounces of the mixture.
2. Sprinkle them with chocolate pieces.
Place three to five chocolate chips on top of each cupcake. Try to keep it off-center because we’ll be cutting it later to fill it with chocolate ganache. Bake muffins according to box instructions.
3. Make the ganache
Once the cupcakes are out of the oven and cooled, prepare the ganache. Ganache is equal parts heavy cream and chocolate, but you can tip the scales by adding a little more chocolate or cream to make it thicker or thinner, depending on your preference. You don’t need much for five or six muffins. I used two ounces of cream and 2.5 ounces of chocolate chips. Microwave a quarter cup of heavy cream for 20 to 30 seconds or until steaming. Pour in a third cup of Toll House chocolate chips and let sit for two minutes to soften. Beat until smooth.
4. Fill the muffins
Once the cupcakes have cooled and the ganache has cooled to a spoonable consistency, use a paring knife to cut a small space in the center of the cupcake. I cut mine into an upside down cone and you can scratch it a little to make room for the ganache. Place a spoonful of ganache into the cavity. You can put the top back on if you want, or just leave it open if you don’t want to surprise anyone.
That’s all. This boxed mix never fails to produce a moist cake. The added chocolate ganache center is silky, rich, and is all you need to really take it to the finish line. They’re easy to make and perfect for your next Olympics party. Pretending to be an Olympian has never been easier. I just want to say thank you to everyone who supported me to make it this far. I owe all this to my village. Thank you very much. Enjoy the cupcakes.
