Why Do You Need the Right Hangers?
I’m going to give you some organization tips that may seem trivial, but I hope I’ve built enough credibility on this topic that you’ll pay attention when I tell you: you need proper hangers in your closet.
Most of us collect hangers as we wander through life and probably don’t think much about them. Personally, as I moved from apartment to apartment, I amassed a collection of hangers, from wood to metal, from plastic to velvet, each of which reminded me of a former roommate or the hotel I stole them from. Sure, it was a nice reminder of where I was, but it really doesn’t belong in the closet. Switching to matching hangers has been a game changer.
Benefits of matching hangers
In December 2020, I redecorated my closet, installed new shelving, and sorted out all my clothes. These endeavors took a lot of time, money and energy. I also have matching hangers. It didn’t take much time, money or energy. It was also the most effective thing I did in my entire closet reorganization.
First of all, matching hangers look nicer. This may not seem like such a big deal to you since guests probably won’t look into your closet but rather see it as a gift to yourself. It’s just more pleasant and calmer to open these doors and see clothes evenly laid out in front of you. Other benefits are a little more tangible: Not only do your clothes look nicer, but they also hang better on hangers of the same size and shape. A large plastic hanger sandwiched between two metal ones breaks up the flow and hides whatever is hanging behind it. The same hangers all hang the same way and move the same way, making it much easier to see and sort out what you have. And don’t just take my word for it; In organizational forums , people who have switched to the new system also confirm this.
When decluttering and organizing, I always recommend using uniform containers to store everything, but the usefulness of uniform storage goes far beyond small boxes and drawer dividers. Simply put, making a small investment in better storage now and making sure everything is in order will save you a lot of stress in the future. It also feels more mature and collected, which is a nice boost on those days when you’re feeling disheveled and overwhelmed by the challenges of adulthood that can’t be overcome with a quick Amazon purchase.
Matching Hangers Ideas
I have to admit that my foray into the world of matching hangers in December 2020 was not my first foray. I had screwed up a few months earlier on my first attempt. I went to Target and bought a mega pack of black plastic hangers. I don’t recommend them. Plastic hangers are large and thick; they take up too much closet space, and clothes can (and do) slide off of them. If you use multi-tier organizers to store hangers and clothes vertically, the plastic hangers may not even fit into the holes, rendering them useless.
I recommend velvet hangers instead. This is what I switched to the second time I tried it and four years later they are still going strong. The hook itself is metal, but the body is thin, which helps reduce its bulk on a clothes hanger or multi-tier organizers. The velvet coating also gives your clothes something to hold onto so they don’t fall off. I have these:
I also bought a set with clips for them from the same brand. I did this because at the time I was going through a period where I had a lot of the same suit sets and I wanted to keep them together. I thought I was Nanny . The pandemic has been a strange time. However, the clips proved useful even when I gave up on this fashion choice because they doubled the amount of items each hanger could hold. You don’t have to limit yourself to storing matching sets on them; they are suitable for any skirts and trousers. The most important thing is to make sure that if you buy clip-on hangers, you get them from the same brand as other matching hangers to maintain consistency.
If you prefer plastic hangers, choose thin ones. They ($23.99) come in a pack of 50 and have plenty of internal hooks and bars to hold everything from belts to tanks, but they’re only 0.2 inches thick. For a more upmarket look, like a cabinet front, you can choose wood, but again, subtlety is your friend. The 20-pack ($23.99) has hangers made from durable wood, but still thin.
